How to Choose a Nursing Home

It is never easy for families to move their elderly to a nursing home. The move is always emotional, if not traumatic, because not all elderly people welcome the idea of living in a nursing home for the rest of their lives. It is nonetheless a decision that must be done because not all families can manage to take care of their old people at home on their own.

In order to reduce the trauma of going to a nursing home, it is important for families to choose the kind of nursing home that will provide the best in terms of comfort and quality of care for their elderly. If the old people are assured that their well-being will continually be safeguarded there, then they may eventually welcome the idea of staying in a nursing home.

But how does one choose the right nursing home for their elderly folk? Here are seven pointers to keep in mind.

  1. Figure out the specific needs that the elderly people who will be moving to the nursing home have. Do they require special medical attention? Do they have specific dietary needs or religious requirements? Will they be bringing their pets with them? The answers to these questions will largely impact your decision in choosing a nursing home for your elderly.

  1. Find a nursing home that is close to the family home. In this way, the old folk will have the assurance that family will still visit them when they can and that they themselves can come back for a visit during special family occasions. Most old people prefer to be close to their families as they advance in age.

  1. See if the neighbourhood surrounding the nursing home is something that the old people find to their liking. It is, after all, their right to choose to live in a place that they would want to live in.

  1. Do your research on what the nursing homes you have in mind has on offer. Collect brochures and look at their websites if they have one. Pay the nursing home a visit as well so that you can gather information from the staff on how the nursing home is run. Whilst you are there, take a look around and see if the elderly people living there appear to be happy.

  1. If you already have a nursing home in mind, verify the registration of the home with the local authorities. Confirm if the nursing home has been inspected and take a look at the report of the inspection.

  1. Check for the qualification of the people manning the nursing home. Do they have the right qualifications, training and experience to provide the care that your elderly folk need?

  1. Have a look at the facilities of the nursing home. What kind of rooms do they have? Does the nursing home have lifts and wheelchair access? Will the caregivers provide personal care, such as assisted baths? Does the home allow pets for elderly people who want to have pets? Does the home have a designated smoking area for people who wish to smoke?

The move to a nursing home does not have to be a traumatic experience for the elderly people in your family. As long as they are assured that all their needs will be adequately met there and that they can still be with their families if they want, you will be able to convince your elderly folk to agree to move to a nursing home.
