Standards Expected of a Nursing Home

All nursing homes in the country are expected to abide by standards set by the government. The National Care Standards Commission or NCSC was in particular formed by the government to keep an eye out on the needs of the elderly in our society when it comes to nursing homes.

When you are choosing a nursing home, you should be aware of these standards that the government imposes on nursing homes. You should see that the nursing home you have selected abides by these standards.

Below is a summary of some of the standards expected of a nursing home.

Choosing the Home

You have the legal right to seek the information that you want from a nursing home that you are looking into. The information is supposed to help you make an intelligent decision on your choice of a home.

To assist you, the nursing home you are surveying should have a residents’ guide that will describe their features and facilities. The elderly relative that you will have living in the home will be put through a needs assessment test so that a more personalised programme of care will be formulated for them. You will also be allowed to have your elderly relatives stay there for a trial period to ensure that the place is truly right for them.

Personal and Medical Care

Residents of a nursing home are supposed to be accorded the proper respect from all the staff manning the home. They should have access to legal and financial consultation if they wish it, and their right to privacy will be upheld at all times. The residents should also be able to receive visitors at any time. Even if they are dying or unable to recognise their own surroundings due to some degenerative condition, they will still be accorded all respect and consideration.

Protection

Residents of the home should be able to air out their complaints without any fear of repercussions. They should also be protected from any form of harm from both the staff and from elements from outside the nursing home. In no way should the residents of the nursing home be subjected to humiliation, inhumane treatment or neglect from the nursing home staff.

Our elderly loved ones go to a nursing home so they could have the best possible care that they can get as they advance further into old age. And they must have as much care that they can get.
